Turn on or off Gmail Notifications
If you've logged in to Gmail on the web, you can turn on Gmail's Desktop notifications to get alert whenever you receive an email or a message, even if you are not looking at Gmail. For mobile users, the notification is integrated with their mail app. This article shows you how to turn on or off Gmail notifications.
Turn Gmail notifications on or off on a web browser
Step 1: Go to Gmail and log into your account.
Step 2: Click the Gear icon in the upper-right corner of the page and select Settings.
Step 3: Scroll to the Desktop Notifications section.
Step 4: Select one of the three options:
- New mail notifications on - You will be notified when any new message arrives in your inbox or primary tab.
- Important mail notifications on - You will be notified only when an important message arrives in your inbox.
- Mail notifications off - You will not be notified when receiving any emails.
Step 5: Scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes.
Turn Gmail notifications on or off on a mobile device
By default, Gmail notifications are turned on for any messages in your Primary label.
Step 1: Open the Gmail app.
Step 2: Tap the icon in the top left of the screen.
Step 3: Scroll down and select Settings.
Step 4: Select the account you want to enable or disable notifications.
Step 5: Tap the box next to Notifications to turn on or off notifications.
Note: Make sure your Gmail inbox is synced with the app. Your device may have separate notifications settings.
