How to set up an out-of-office auto reply in Gmail

When you are on a vacation or without access to the Internet, you can set up an out-of-office auto-reply (email auto-responder) in Gmail. Once you enable this feature, those who send you a message will receive an email response informing your absence and inability to get back immediately. 

How to set up an out-of-office auto-reply in Gmail

On Desktop

Step 1: Go to Gmail and log into your account.

Step 2: Click the Settings icon in the top right corner and select Settings.

Step 3: Scroll down to the Vacation responder section.

Step 4: Select Vacation responder on.

Step 5: Enter the date range, subject, and your message.

Step 6: (Optional) Under your message, select Only send a response to people in my Contacts if you only want your contacts to see your out-of-office or vacation reply.

Step 7: Scroll down to the bottom and click Save Changes.

Note: If you have a Gmail signature, it will be shown under your vacation reply.

On Mobile (Android, iOS)

Step 1: Open the Gmail app.

Step 2: Tap in the upper-left corner.

Step 3: Scroll to the bottom and tap Settings.

Step 5: Tap Vacation responder.

Step 6: Toggle the button next to Vacation responder to the right to turn it on.

Step 7: Set the date range, enter your subject and message.

Step 8: Tap Done
